It's all too easy to generate a mile-long list of what's wrong with the world as it is now. There are a lot of things to be afraid of, most likely because our news media have discovered that fear sells newspapers and TV advertising. You can concentrate on all the ugliness and evil of your fellow human beings and either pine for some mythical simpler golden age that never was, or daydream all starry-eyed about a shiny happy future. So, in the name of getting you guys to think, tell me what you believe is right with modern times and the world as you see it. If you think there's nothing right and everything sucks and we're just doomed, please do not reply, because that is not the aim of this topic. OK, your turn.

What's right with the modern world today is that it's easier to communicate with people than it ever was before, more people have more opportunities in the developed world than ever before, We have more choice with regards entertainment than we ever did before, medical science has advanced so now there's cures for things like TB that used to wipe out many people, people are more informed now about what's good or bad for them, More have access to education. People can move proffessions now, there's more opportunity for people to better themselves now than there ever was.

There is an old saying that says to effect, “You don’t miss the water till the well runs dry.” You may ask so what does this got to do with believing there is a rightness with modern times… Well, case in point and ‘tis a literal “missing of the water” as it were for when I go North into the Country the “well” in fact “went dry” like in the early 1950’s from what previous family members have shared with me (the place is an old family home, a homestead taken out in the mid 1860’s – btw, not a typo for I do mean 1860’s and not 1960’s) and in the years since when we are in that area on vacations, weekends and the like, there is a NEED to haul all water in by carriers and at present NO shower facilities… Do I ever appreciate modern times and the ways of indoor plumbing…???? YESSSSS! You better believe it.

Another thing good about modern times is the way blind people are treated. Yes, there is still discrimination, but for the most part, we have a lot more advantages than in the past. Most blind people don't have to go to special schools for the blind anymore. And we aren't hidden away from the public to keep from embarrassing our families. I understand that happened a lot in the early part of the 20th century and before. And if we have half a brain and can advocate for ourselves, we can go to college and get good jobs. Computer technology has opened up a lot of opportunities for us in the job market, to help us in school, and just for communicating in general.

that all depends on what part of the world you are from. in Italy for example we aren't so lucky believe me i've seen it.

Maybe not LV, but the purpose of this post was to get us to name positive things about modern society. Can't you think of anything positive? It doesn't have to be about blind people, that was just my own contribution to the question.

it's a fantastic thing that there's so much emphasis on education nowadays Not only for people with disabilities, but also women. It's a great thing that we've moved on from the "a womans place is in the home"
Also i think the musical diversity in society today is far better than any other time in history. it's fantastic that there's so much culture.

I think to have been born in the 70's myself and even for others to have been born in the 80's and 90's is probably the most opportune time. In computers we've gone from BBS's to shell accounts to the gui and web . The opportunitys are pretty broad for the blind in regard to computers and the web as many others have said. the things that have been accomplished in the last 10 years are amazing alone with health, science, etc. I for one can't wait to see what were doing in 2036 at age 61 providing that I am still around. grin!

Its kind of obvious - but the internet / world wide web makes a HUGE difference to my life. I can access so much which just would not be available to me without it.

1. A more advanced and accessable computer tecknology. 2.better treatment and more opportunities for the disabled people in the developed world. 3. the fact that women have more choices now a days. A woman doesn't have to get married and have kids if she doesn't want to. Niether does a man.

4. better access to reproductive rights information.

5. sexual revolution in general and an axeptence of gay people into society.

6. a lot less racism.

Two words. Dental care. Seriously, how much difference does that make to general comfort? Other than that, things that make me very happy include: recording technology and the availability of audio recordings from so many times and places, the way the internet can transcend the sensorship laws of individual governments, not always, granted, but often. current UK rock, come to think of it, current Aussie rock's been pretty good too. Oh, and icecream flavours. Can't forget icecream flavours. *g*
